If you lived alone with your animal, what you have lost is not only a pet. It is the thing that made a house into somewhere with another heartbeat in it, and the quiet that replaces them is a physical presence in the room. Heavenly Pastures provides pet cremations for families in and around Ormskirk. A word on geography, since it is unusual here. There is no crematorium in Ormskirk itself and no branch of ours in the town. Our site is at Burscough, a few miles up the road, which does at least make this one of the closest places to us of anywhere we serve.
The Particular Silence of an Empty House
People who share a home with other people lose a pet into a household that is still busy. People who lived alone with an animal lose the household itself. The difference is enormous and it is rarely acknowledged, partly because it sounds like an admission that is hard to make out loud.
What Actually Changes
It is the small mechanics of the day that catch you out rather than the big moments. Nobody needs feeding at seven. There is no reason to be up. The door opens onto nothing coming to meet it, and the first evening you realise you have not spoken aloud since yesterday is a strange one. People often describe cooking as the thing that stops, because cooking for one with nobody hopefully watching feels pointless in a way it did not the week before. The bins go out and nobody notices. The heating comes on for one person. These are small things that add up to something that is not small at all.
You Are Not Being Excessive
There is a persistent idea that grief should be proportionate to the species, and it causes people who live alone a good deal of unnecessary shame, generally coming from people whose own houses are full. If that animal was your daily company for a decade, the loss is proportionate to what they actually were rather than to what a stranger imagines a pet to be. Nobody here will suggest you get another one to cheer yourself up. People will say it, usually within a fortnight and usually kindly, and you are under no obligation to act on it or to argue with them about it.
Where to Take It If It Gets Heavy
We arrange cremations. We are not counsellors and we would not pretend otherwise, so if the weight of this becomes more than you can carry alone, your own doctor is the right person and they will have heard it before. There are also organisations dedicated to pet bereavement whose whole purpose is listening to exactly this. Asking for that is not an overreaction. If you are struggling to eat or sleep several weeks on, or finding that you are avoiding people entirely, that is worth mentioning to somebody rather than waiting for it to lift on its own.
Being Close By
Because Burscough is only a short distance from Ormskirk, families here have a genuinely easy choice about whether to bring their pet to us. A chapel of rest is available and the time you take in it is yours, without anybody hovering. Ringing ahead helps so that somebody is expecting you, though short notice on the same day can usually be managed. Some people here quite like knowing exactly where their animal has gone, and being able to picture the place afterwards is worth a good deal to them. Equally, collection from your home is straightforward and quick from this distance, and the travel-time bands that set the cost are on the areas we cover page.
The Two Options
A decision is needed either way. An individual cremation service means your animal is the only one involved, which is why their ashes can be returned to you afterwards. A communal cremation service involves several animals together and nothing comes back to anybody. People living alone quite often want the ashes precisely because the house is otherwise so empty, though plenty do not, and both are perfectly reasonable. If you are genuinely torn, the thing to know is that the individual route leaves the decision open afterwards while the other one does not. Costs are published on the pet cremation price list, and our standards explains how the work is carried out.
Somewhere to Put It Down
You are warmly welcome to leave a photograph and something about your animal in the Remembrance section of this website. Families across the region have put their own there. For somebody with nobody at home to talk to about it, writing a few sentences and knowing they sit somewhere permanent can matter more than it sounds like it should.
If the Decision Is Still Ahead of You
Where your animal is elderly or unwell and you are dreading what is coming, arranging things in advance takes one weight off. There is nothing morbid in it and nothing is binding. Our page on planned euthanasia covers what a decision made ahead of time tends to involve.
Ring Whenever
Call 01704 776976 whenever suits, including simply to talk through what would happen rather than to arrange anything. If you would rather write, our contact form reaches the same people and there is no rush at any point.
