It is worth saying that we know the difference and will not treat an address as though it were somewhere on the edge of Oldham. Households up there are frequently half braced to be told they sit outside somebody’s area, and they do not. How far away you are affects the collection charge and nothing whatever else about the care your animal receives.

Weather and Getting Through

Winter up there is a different proposition from winter three miles down the valley. Lanes drift, the higher roads close, and what is a straightforward run in October becomes something else entirely in January. None of that stops us coming, but it does mean a phone call is worth having about timing rather than assuming. If conditions are genuinely bad we will say so honestly and agree a time that works rather than promising an hour and then not appearing, which is the last thing any household needs on that particular day.

Stone Cottages and Narrow Ways

A good deal of the housing is old, built solid out of local stone with doorways and stairs made for smaller people carrying less. Some of the lanes will not take a vehicle at all. None of that is a problem provided we know in advance, so mention it when you telephone and the right equipment and the right number of people come with us. Nobody in a grieving household should be manoeuvring a large dog down a cottage stair.

Hill Farms and Working Animals

Holdings up here keep animals that occupy more than one role, and one genuine legal point follows from that. The rules on animal by-products draw a line between stock and companion animals, and that line decides what is permissible afterwards. Where a dog or cat was kept for company it falls the right side of it, no matter which building housed the animal. Something forming part of the farming enterprise may well fall the other. Where a household spans both, a brief call settles which applies in a couple of minutes and saves difficulty later.

The Two Services

One decision matters above all the rest. An individual cremation service keeps your animal alone through every stage, and that is the reason ashes can be returned to you. A communal cremation service puts several through together, with nothing given back to any household. The same team does both to one standard. Working households who have always simply buried a dog on the land sometimes decide that for one particular animal they would like something back this time, which is a perfectly coherent wish and reads as no rejection of anything.

What It Costs

The pet cremation price list shows the lot in the open rather than leaving it to private conversations, which means you can see the position without a conversation about money being necessary. Weight bands govern the cremation. Coming out is charged separately according to how long the run from Burscough takes, and those bands appear on the areas we cover page. Driving down to us instead removes that portion entirely.

Outside the Working Week

Ordinary hours fall Monday to Friday, with a separate arrangement past them at an additional charge. An animal going in the evening, where first light will do, makes waiting cheaper with nothing put at risk. Somewhere cool and undisturbed is all that is required, and nothing at all is made harder by the hours passing.

An Animal Found Outdoors

Animals who die on open ground are frequently not found for some hours, which carries its own distress, and people worry that too much time has gone by for anything proper to be done. It very rarely has. Ring and describe the situation and we will tell you honestly rather than leaving you guessing, and your vet will generally say the same if you would sooner hear it from them.

Where the Ashes Go

Families here often have somewhere in mind and it is usually high up. A good deal of that land is farmed or managed rather than open, so asking whoever holds it first prevents an awkward moment. Wind up there behaves unpredictably, so choose the day carefully and do not go alone if you can help it. Nor is any of it required. Plenty of families keep ashes indoors for good and never once feel the matter is unresolved.
