There Is No Deadline on Any of This

That applies to the practical side as well. Ashes can sit at home for a year before anybody decides anything. Belongings do not have to be cleared this month, and families who empty a room the same afternoon regret it far more often than those who put a box in the spare room and look at it again in six months. Once a collar goes in a bin during that first terrible week it is gone, and people do come looking for it months on. Much of the housing here went up in the nineteenth century for people working the mills and the docks, which means narrow hallways, doors that were not built with much clearance and stairs that turn sharply halfway.
