Dogs raised here grow up on a shoreline rather than in a park, running the sand between the marram grass and the tideline with the Alt estuary curving away to the north. It is an unusual childhood for an animal and it makes for an unusual absence afterwards. Households frequently tell us that the shore is the thing they cannot face, rather than the empty basket indoors. There is no correct timescale for going back and no prize for forcing it. Some walk it the following morning because staying indoors is worse, and others avoid the whole stretch for the best part of a year. Both are entirely usual.

Whichever route is taken, this decision has to be made. Under an individual cremation service your animal is alone from start to finish, which is precisely why ashes may be handed back at the end. Under a communal cremation service several are cremated as a group and nothing returns to any household. Same team, same standards, either way, and no household here has ever been thought less of for choosing one over the other. Since only one of them leaves ashes to bring home, and since that cannot be revisited afterwards, be certain before you say which.

Where an animal has died in the evening and morning would serve, morning is cheaper and takes nothing away. Keep them cool and quiet until then. Nothing whatever must be done in the dark, however pressing it feels at two in the morning with nobody awake to ask.
